Cravat.The.HIStory.

Waaay back, Croatian merceneries wore pieces of fabric around their necks which caught the interest of the Parisians. Playing on the Croatian word Hrvati and the French word Croates, they named it the Cravat. The fashion craze swept over Europe, where men and women wore nice pieces of fabric around their necks. Different variations ensued and around 1800 a book was made called Neckclothitania which gave directions and illustrations on 14 different ways to tie cloth around the neck and was the first to use the word "tie" in connection with neckwear.

In the early 1900s, ties became part of the every day man's attire, especially with the industrial revolution. New York tiemaker Jesse Langsdorf designed an easier and more efficient way to cut and piece together the tie, improving elasticity for the tie to maintain shape. Later ties became bolder and sometimes more ornate. Reaching modern times, the tie became skinnier and due to Pop art, new patterns emerged that created bolder and brighter looks. Thus today, the modern tie which is still being innovated but of course, widely popular whether skinny or wide.
